This project was originally written by Tom Butterworth and commissioned by VIDVOX, 2012. We like to know about software that supports HAP, so if you are using it for a project, please get in touch. The HAP codec project is open-source, licensed under a Free BSD License, meaning you can use it in your commercial or noncommercial applications free of charge. Vidvox also have a selection of sample media. DirectShow Codec: Samples encoded using the RenderHeads DirectShow codec (5 MB zip).QuickTime Codec: Samples encoded using the Vidvox QuickTime codec (20 MB zip).AVF Batch Converter: Samples encoded using Vidvox AVF Batch Converter (35 MB zip).TouchDesigner: Samples encoded using Derivative TouchDesigner (1.5 GB zip).FFmpeg: Samples encoded using FFmpeg (24 MB zip).16K: Samples at high resolution (35 MB zip). Odd Dimensions: Samples with irregular dimensions (2 MB zip).Test Materialsĭevelopers of decoders may find the following packs of material useful for testing: It will be of interest to those implementing their own decoder or encoder. This repository hosts the HAP specification and reference source code for encoding and decoding HAP frames. Please visit the HAP site for links to encoders and more information about HAP as well as resources for developers. This table gives an overview of advantages and disadvantages that should be taken into account.HAP is a family of video codecs which perform decompression using a computer's graphics hardware, substantially reducing the CPU usage necessary to play video - this is useful in situations where CPU power is a limiting factor, such as when working with multiple high resolution videos in real-time. Essentially, whether you export the content as images to a folder, or as frames in a MOV container even results in almost the same file size. Up and Downsides from an Image Sequence versus a Single FileĪs said above the image quality and playback performance of DDS flavors can be compared to the HAP flavors. As of this announcement, the Hap video codec family can now be natively used on Windows in TouchDesigner, OpenFrameworks (via ofxHapPlayer), Jitter (via jit.gl.hap), DirectShow and Unity (via RenderHeads AVProQuicktime), with support coming very soon to D3 Media Servers and the Isadora programming environment. In Pandoras Box Snappy content is decompressed on the fly. Per definition, the HAP format always uses the snappy compression but the plugin gives you the option to deactivate it. To save disk space you can choose to directly compress the image files using the SNP format. Thus the main difference is whether you would like to export DDS images as single files to a folder, or combine them in a container format resulting in a single file.Įach format has only one further render setting. Secondly, you can render content in a single file (MOV container):įor the differences, simply see above description as DDS and HAP are essentially the same or the chapter " Video Formats". If you looking for an uncompressed content format, the current recommendation is to export an image sequence with the DPX or TIF format which are natively supported by the mentioned Adobe products. Both formats, DDSA and YCoCg, result in a doubled file size compared to DDS. In short: in difference to the DDS format with the smallest file size (and thus best performance), DDSA supports transparency and YCoCg results in a higher image quality for most content (especially of interest when the content shows gradients). These formats are described in detail in the chapter " Image Formats". Which Formats are Available?įirst of all, the plugin allows to create image sequences: In case you are not seeing the codecs show up there (especially after upgrading to Big Sur), hold down the key while launching the application. When setting up the final rendering, you can choose from six "Christie" formats which are added to the format list. As soon as you start one of these applications the plugin is automatically loaded. The installer checks which version of Adobe After Effects, Media Encoder or Premiere Pro is installed. You can download the Adobe Plugin from our website's " Download Center" and install it on your Windows 8.1/10 platform or macOS 10.15 "Catalina" and above. Keep in mind that image sequence playback is mainly aimed for SSD based systems. The content can be saved either as DDS image sequences (three flavors) or as a single MOV file with the according HAP flavor. With this plugin, content can be produced directly for optimized playback in Pandoras Box without any further transcoding step. Christie has developed a plugin for Adobe After Effects, Media Encoder or Premiere Pro running on a PC and Mac platform.
